The Canadian Coton de Tulear Club is a non-profit organisation. It was formed so that people who love this breed could share what they know, help each other, and look after the breed together.
The early years
The club was founded in 1993 by Monique and Denis Carriere of Ottawa, Ontario. In 1994 the Canadian Kennel Club officially accredited the CCTC as the National Parent Breed Club. That same year, or just after, the club newsletter was launched under the name Coton Malgache. It has been published every quarter since then and remains one of the main ways members stay in touch.
How the club is run
A board of seven directors manages the day to day operations, with a newsletter and membership chairperson alongside them. Members elect the board every two years. All of the work is done by volunteers.
The club is funded by membership dues and by advertising fees. Every member agrees to follow the Code of Ethics, which sets out how Cotons should be bred and what members promise to do to protect the breed.
What the club does
The main aim is to support, educate and advise owners, members, and people who are thinking about getting a Coton. The club also works to preserve the qualities of the breed.
Each year the club hosts a national Breed Specialty dog show. This is the high point of the year for many members, and a good chance to see the breed at its best.
Where we are now
More than thirty years on, the club is still run by volunteers and still focused on the same things. As of 2026, the club continues to welcome new members, to support breeders who test their dogs, and to help owners who want to do right by their Coton.
If you would like to know more about the club, or you are thinking of joining, please write to us, call us, or come and visit us at a club event. We are always glad to hear from people who care about the breed.
