Description

Inherited hyperuricosuria (HU) causes dogs to produce urine with very high levels of uric acid. This can lead to bladder stones, and less frequently kidney stones.

Test method

The VetGen test is based on research performed at the University of California Davis which identified the mutation responsible for the disease.

Genetic/breeder information

The disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The DNA test for this specific mutation can determine if dogs are normal or if they carry one or two copies of the mutation. Dogs that carry two copies of the mutation will be affected and susceptible to develop bladder/kidney stones.

Stats within CdT breed

Cotons are not listed as a breed of high risk of this genetic trait.
